FUTSOC entered three of its teams in the Sweetbay Memorial Day Cup Tournament, a final tune-up before a host of events we are planning to attend this summer.
Our FUTSOC U18-19 boys team, completed group play as the only undefeated team, with convincing victories over highly ranked opponents Driftwood 94/95 by a score of 3-1, Homestead Hawks U18 by a score of 3-0 and then 2-1 over Miami Lakes SC 94/95 Premier. The Championship Match was played on Sunday morning at the beautiful North Collier Regional Park in Naples. With a very sizeable crowd present, FUTSOC dominated play with possession at over 70/30 and many close opportunities on goal, as wave after wave of attacks were thwarted by the solid goal keeping of our most worthy opponents. In the second half, with some key adjustments to our tactical formation, we were able to penetrate the tight formation of the defense with a zigzagging run down the left flank from left lateral defender Agustin "Agu" Sauberville who sent a line ball from the back to midfielder Alvaro "Cesc" Morales, who in turn set it further down the line to a waiting Nico Sauberville, who dribbled around three defenders to lay the ball diagonally back slightly outside the 6 yard box to an inward-charging Nick Huber - expertly finished with a low streaming shot to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The goal held up for the rest of the match, as a penalty kick awarded to the opponents, flew over the top of the net and an offside position negated another goal opportunity. With the 1-0 victory, the championship was won by our outstanding group of players who did not lose a single match in the event and outscored the opponents by 9-2, and never trailed during the entire event. Our sincerest appreciation to our worthy opponents who are all nationally ranked, and provided outstanding competition in this tune-up event and congratulations to our powerful squad which will now embark on a grueling state and national tournament schedule during the following 15 months.
